The holiday season is in full swing! I make a vow to myself every year that I will not set foot in any mall, department store, or shopping center between thanksgiving and the new year. It’s just too crazy for me! People are agitated, drive aggressively, probably depressed because they can’t afford what they want to buy for their families. It’s just bad news all around.
Yes I prefer the much more mellow approach of staying home and making gifts.
Of course, there are the few things I might like to purchase that I cannot make, and that, dear friends, is when I will pour myself a cup of coffee and peruse the internet. Ah, shopping in your PJ’s from your couch. That’s lovely.

So, I’ve basically been crocheting up a storm here. One of the items I’ve made I already gifted, so I’ll share that now.
The first shawl I’ve ever made! I don’t know why I haven’t made one sooner! This one is the “Amita Shawl”, a free pattern from Red Heart, and is available here: Free Crochet Pattern, Amita Shawl. The pattern says it’s for experienced crocheters, but I wouldn’t let that deter you. I think a beginner with a few patterns under their belt could tackle it no problem.
This is the shawl I made for a friend, with Caron Simply Soft in berry blast.

It works up fairly quickly. I was able to finish it in two evenings (that’s with one eye on the toddler at all times). If you are childless you can probably finish it in an evening.

Even before finishing the first shawl, I knew I would be making one for myself! Some black sparkle Simply Soft yarn was calling my name!

The pattern calls for just one skein of Simply Soft yarn. I opted to repeat rows 3-4 once more than called for to make the shawls just a bit larger. This did put it over the 1-skein mark, but it was worth it in my opinion.
Back to making the Christmas gifts. Happy holidays everyone!
