1. Easy Fingerless Gloves Video Tutorial

The first beginner crochet pattern I have to share is actually the first crochet item I even made, a pair of easy fingerless gloves, or wrist warmers. I’d like to share this one first because, technically, it’s not a pattern, it’s a video. So if you don’t know how to read a crochet pattern yet this is a great place to start learning without having to actually read a pattern. Many thanks to Claire of BobWilson123 for the great video tutorial. She will talk you through (and show you) step by step how to crochet a simple and lovely pair of wrist warmers.

The instructions are clear (and close up), and the pattern text is displayed in the video as it’s playing, essentially helping you learn to read a crochet pattern along the way. Being able to pause and rewind to make sure you got everything right is priceless. So don’t let not being able to read a crochet pattern stop you!

3. Small Hanging Basket – Goddess Crochet

This crochet hanging basket is a great pattern for beginners for a couple reasons. It is small, which means it can be completed relatively quickly. Also, it only uses single crochet stitches, and a chain at the end to form the loop. Simple to make, and when you’re done you’ll have a great sense of accomplishment AND a place to store your pens. Score!

4. Mulberry Scarf – Jennifer of Fiber Flux

One of the quintessential items every crocheter will want to know how to make is a scarf. They are versatile, unisex, and make great gifts. I chose this particular scarf pattern as a beginner crochet pattern because it is worked from side to side the narrow way. Many scarves are made chaining as long as you would like the scarf to be, but if you are just beginning to crochet, a super long starting chain is probably the last thing you want to be doing. You may get discouraged with your lack of quick progress, and if you happen to chain the wrong number of chains, you won’t find out until you reach the end of the next row…that may induce tears! So, since this scarf crochet pattern is worked side to side the short way, you’ll see your scarf start coming together quickly and it will make you want to keep going! One note about this pattern, I do NOT recommend using the yarn the designer specifies. Yes, it is very pretty…however, it is a fancier yarn which will make the stitches harder to see. Use a regular, run of the mill yarn for your first attempt, then once you are comfortable with the pattern go ahead and break out the fancy stuff.

If you’d rather crochet a cowl than a scarf, this beginner crochet pattern is a great one to try. It uses only single crochet and double crochet stitches and has a very well written pattern. The finished item is beautiful too, no one will know you are just a beginner!

6. Simple Squares Headband – Goddess Crochet

I added this simple squares headband to the round up to add a little variety to the projects, and also because as the name suggests, it is a simple pattern. You could work this up in afternoon and have it ready to wear for an evening out! The pattern also includes a crochet symbol chart, which I love.

7. Coffee Cup Cozy – Claire of Hooray Crochet

This simple coffee cup cozy pattern is a great beginner crochet pattern. You can use it to protect your hands from a too-hot coffee cup, or to keep an iced coffee from sweating all over the place. It’s also a great eco-friendly pattern, since this coffee cup cozy will replace all the cardboard sleeves you might otherwise use for each coffee you purchase.
