The "Bucket Basket" - Free Crochet Pattern

Free Crochet Pattern – Bucket Basket

This year I was not as ambitious with my holiday gift making as last year, mostly due to time constraints. When you start making your Christmas presents months and months in advance, it affords you the opportunity to make large presents for people. In 2015 I made two blankets, one for my parents and one for my husband’s parents. Pretty sure I started both of those blankets in the summer. You crocheters and knitters out there KNOW that making a blanket is a labor of love and time intensive. December 1st is when I started on gift making so blankets were absolutely out of the question.

Functionality is always my first choice when deciding on gifts to make. Will it be used, or will it be thrown in the back of the closet to never again see the light of day? I’ve had this cotton basket pattern written down in chicken-scratch on a piece of paper and decided to brush it off and rewrite it. Since it makes a lovely, functional gift, I made one for my mother in law and each of my sister in laws for Christmas. They were a hit!

The basket calls for two strands of worsted weight cotton held together. If you have never worked with two strands held together, have no fear! It’s not hard at all. Just pretend the two strands are one and you’ll do fine. If you don’t have cotton, acrylic will work too. If you want your basket to be on the rigid side make sure to choose a stiffer yarn. Your less expensive, econo-style yarn would work perfect for this project, save your soft stuff for something else. This “bucket basket” is smaller at the bottom and tapered to widen at the top. Measures approximately 12″ tall by 9″ wide and would be useful for a variety of uses. It fits a few skeins of yarn quite nicely, so it would make a perfect project bag. The amount of yarn I used is a big estimation, as I was using a big ball of cotton…not sure exactly how many small skeins it would take but I made my best guess.
