Twelve designers have teamed up with the CAL Central group to bring you some fresh squares to add to your next blanket, poncho, bag, or whatever else you like to turn your squares into! Each patterns includes both a 6” and 12” squares, giving you plenty of options for how you put them together. I’m super excited to be part of this fun crochet along! Having never designed a square before, it was a fun mind challenge as a designer to come up with something fresh. The “Granny Geo” Square is my best attempt to design something that is way easier than it looks. Even though it looks hard, you’re only ever working with one color at a time. By working into only the back loops, we leave the front loops open to work into 2 rounds later. This “dropdown” technique makes for a wonderful visual effect, without using post stitches. It’s called “mosaic crochet”. If you’ve tried it, you probably love it, and if you haven’t, please DO give it a try. It’s so easy, I promise! This square would be a great introduction to mosaic crochet, because it works up fairly quickly, and you don’t have to know how to read charts. Just follow the pattern as written, and you’ll be golden! I can’t wait to see what you’ll make with your squares!

Supplies:
Size J (6mm) Crochet Hook
2 Colors Worsted Weight Yarn (4), approximately 20 yards each
Gauge and Size:
14 st and 13 rows in 4” single crochet
Small square – 6”
Large square – 12”
Notes:
1. All Stitches are to be worked into the back loop only, unless otherwise specified.
2. Do not cut colors after each round. Instead, drop unused color to back, picking it up again as needed. At end of round when joining, “capture” unused color in the back with your slip stitch join, getting it ready to be brought up for the next round – it will keep the back of your square nice and tidy.
