Spiked Watermelon Wrist Warmers – Free Crochet Pattern

Spiked Watermelon Wristers - Free Crochet Pattern

When Marie from Underground Crafter asked me to join in on designing a crochet pattern for the CAL Central group, it was an instant “yes” from me. CAL is short for crochet-a-long, for those who are wondering, and they are lots of fun! This particular set of crochet-a-longs is “New Year, New Skill”, and the idea is to expand your crocheting repitore while sharing your projects/pictures with others who are learning along with you, too. There is the Facebook Group or the Ravelry Group, whichever platform is right for you.

New Year, New Skill CAL

Marie put together an awesome blog post with a list of ALL the designers and free crochet patterns for the crochet-a-long, updated as new patterns are added. There is also a giveaway for those participating! Get all the details for the 2018 New Year, New Skill CAL here, and if you are just interested in the free crochet pattern, scroll on down!

For my pattern I wanted to design something that was easily attainable and wouldn’t be too frustrating for even a beginner, but something that is still fun. Spike stitch is super easy, because really, it’s just single crochet done in a different way. It has a very cool visual effect, particularly when you combine it with high contrast colors. I chose some fun colors that reminded me of watermelon. Feel free to use just 2 colors for a striped spiked wrister, or go color crazy and use up some scraps! Can’t wait to see what you all come up with. Don’t forget to share pictures! Happy hooking!

Supplies:

Worsted Weight Yarn (approx. 50 yards of each color)
5mm Hook for Small and Large, 4.5mm Hook for Medium, 5.5mm Hook for XLarge

Worsted weight yarn
Clover Amour Crochet Hook Size H (5.00 mm)

Gauge:

4.5mm Hook – 9 st and 10 rows = 2” in sc
5mm Hook – 8 st and 10 rows = 2” in sc
5.5mm Hook – 8 st and 9 rows = 2” in sc

Measurements and sizing info:

Small – Starting chain of 26 with 5mm Hook
Medium – Starting chain of 28 with 4.5mm Hook
Large – Starting chain of 28 with 5mm Hook
XLarge – Starting chain of 28 with 5.5mm Hook

Notes:

Change colors by introducing new color as last YO/pull through of round before the slip stitch to join.

To avoid having to cut and weave in a lot of tails, carry the two unused colors up at the join. To do this, slip stitch around the unused colors at every join, then drop them to the back. Take time every so often to untangle your colors.

These fingerless gloves are made to be form fitting. If you want yours to be loose/slouchy, go a size larger than you normally would.

Special Stitch:

Spk – Spike Stitch: Work single crochet into stitch below working row
