Crochet World Magazine December 2018

The December issue of Crochet World Magazine is chock full of festive goodies and decor to get you into the holiday spirit. You’ll find ornaments and tree skirts, as well as wearables and blankets to keep you cozy. If you need a quick gift to make, the slouchy beanie is sure to hit the spot.

We all need a good beanie in our lives, especially if you live in a snowy winter climate like I do. The “Slouchy Beanie”, by designer Kathy Olivarez, works up quick so it makes a great last minute gift. And, if you’re looking to learn a new skill, this beanie utilizes the herringbone half double crochet stitch. Don’t worry, it’s way easier than it sounds! After working a few rounds with the recommended size N hook, I found the stitches to be just too loose for my liking, so I decided to go down to an L (6.5mm) hook – and liked the result much better. Using the recommended bulky weight yarn and the size L hook, the “youth” size fit my 6 year old perfectly.

Since I don’t have a whole lot of bulky yarn, I decided to make a hat for myself in worsted weight yarn, using a J hook. Following the pattern for the adult size large, this worked up a small-medium size hat, and it fit me quite well!

Since it’s getting close to Christmas and we just put our tree up, I HAD to make one of these adorable Santa ornaments! The patterns calls for one of those clear ornaments to go underneath the crochet fabric, but since I didn’t have one of those I just stuffed the ball and that worked out lovely. I also didn’t have any red ribbon, so I just chained the loop. Sometime you’ve got to improvise! It worked out just fine, and the ornament looks great hanging on the tree!
