It’s Dr. Seuss’s birthday today (March 2nd)! Pretty much everyone has heard of “Green Eggs and Ham” and “Cat in the Hat”, but Ted Geisel created much more than just rhyming moral stories for children. He started doing cartoons for newspapers, and was not shy about getting political. His messages on equality and acceptance took root in this form and eventually spilled out into stories like “The Sneetches.” Even some of his children’s stories were disguised political messages. “The Zax”. If those non-budging north-going zax and south-going zax don’t represent the two American political parties, I don’t know what does.

As a child (before I needed not worry about anything political, Dr. Seuss was just a favorite author. And the cartoons! I know I’m “dating” myself here, but I my parents made me a mixed VHS tape, with the classic “Sneetches”, “Zax”, “Green Eggs and Ham” trifecta, along with the Lorax and perhaps the lesser well know “Pontifal Pock and his Magic Piano”. Gosh, I wore that tape out watching it so much. For the youn-ins who are asking “What’s a VHS”?, google it. Or ask Siri. Or Alexa. Or Cortana…

My daughter’s school has been doing Seuss-stuff all week (fun!), and tomorrow is wear black, white, and red to have all “Cat in the Hat” colors. SO, obviously I had to make her something, a little “accessory” to wear. At first I was knitting leg warmers but when she got home from school she was like “nope”, not wearing leg warmers. *sigh* How can I disappoint that sweet face. SO, I made these fingerless gloves for her. Which I guess she actually wants to wear. And they took way less time to make than however long those knitted leg warmers were going to.

Obviously you do not have to do the Cat in the Hat colors, this pattern will work great as a base for your own customizing. It fits great (with a bit of slouch), on my 6 yr old, so the pattern as written should fit a 4-7 year old, easy. If you want to go a size up or down with hooks to make it larger or smaller you could get a bit more range out of the pattern. I may work up the adult version sometime, I just wanted to get this pattern out on the big man’s birthday.

Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss!
